Understanding wheel offset and backspacing
Wheel offset and backspacing describe the hub-mounting face from different reference points. Offset measures the mounting face relative to the wheel centreline in millimetres. Backspacing measures from the mounting face to the inner wheel edge, usually in inches. This tool converts between them and compares the nominal position of two wheels.
Inputs explained
- Wheel width: use stamped bead-seat width in nominal mode or the full outside width in measured mode.
- Offset: positive offset places the mounting face toward the outside of the wheel; negative offset moves it toward the inside.
- Backspacing: distance from the mounting pad to the inner rim edge.
- Flange allowance: estimated extra outside width beyond the nominal bead seats, split across both sides.
Formula and assumptions
When all dimensions are in inches, backspacing equals half the overall wheel width plus offset divided by 25.4. The reverse conversion is offset equals backspacing minus half the overall width, multiplied by 25.4. Nominal wheel width excludes the rim flanges, so nominal mode adds the selected flange allowance. Measured mode is preferable when you can measure the complete outside width accurately.
Worked example
A nominal 8-inch wheel with +35 mm offset will have more backspacing than the same width with +15 mm offset. If you compare an 8-inch ET35 wheel with a 9-inch ET45 wheel, the second wheel is wider on both sides of its centreline, while the additional positive offset shifts the wheel inward. The result separates inner movement from outer movement so neither effect is hidden.

- Inner movement: positive movement toward suspension-side parts reduces nominal space.
- Outer movement: positive outward movement increases poke toward the arch.
- Effective offset: stamped offset adjusted for any entered spacer.
Use cases and limitations
The tool is useful when comparing aftermarket wheels, checking a manufacturer backspacing specification, estimating the effect of a spacer, or translating between inch and millimetre conventions. It cannot verify brake-caliper shape, hub or fastener compatibility, steering clearance, tire bulge, load rating or body contact. Measure the actual wheel when accuracy is important and verify the complete assembly on the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Is wheel width the same as outside wheel width?
No. Advertised width is measured between the bead seats. Overall outside width includes both rim flanges and is normally greater.
What does more positive offset do?
For the same wheel width, more positive offset moves the wheel inward. Changing width at the same time can alter both inner clearance and outer poke.
Can backspacing alone guarantee fitment?
No. It describes one nominal dimension and cannot account for component shapes, tire width, vehicle movement or hardware compatibility.
