Wheel Poke & Clearance Calculator

Compare two wheel widths and offsets to see outer-edge movement and relative inner clearance—without entering unrelated tire dimensions.

Current

Reference

Bead-seat width, or 18x8.5. Only width is used in this wheel-only calculation.

Signed ET; accepts ET45, +45 and ET-12.

AdvancedCurrent spacer

Blank means no spacer.

Proposed

Change

Bead-seat width, or 18x8.5. Only width is used in this wheel-only calculation.

Signed ET; accepts ET45, +45 and ET-12.

AdvancedProposed spacer

Blank means no spacer.

Result updated. The proposed outer wheel edge changes by +22.7 mm (toward the fender); relative inner clearance changes by −2.7 mm (less clearance).

Result

The proposed outer wheel edge changes by +22.7 mm (toward the fender); relative inner clearance changes by −2.7 mm (less clearance).

Outer edge movement

+22.7 mm

Toward the fender

Signed movement relative to the current nominal bead-seat edge—not the tire sidewall or fender.

Inner clearance change

−2.7 mm

Less clearance

Positive means more space on the suspension side; negative means less relative space.

Nominal bead-seat edges, signed from the mounting plane. Current (dashed): −140.3 mm to +50.3 mm; Proposed (solid): −143.0 mm to +73.0 mm.

Details

Current inner / outer edge
140.3 mm / 50.3 mm
Proposed inner / outer edge
143.0 mm / 73.0 mm
Current / proposed effective ET
45.0 mm / 35.0 mm
Symmetric axle track change
+20.0 mmSame offset/spacer change on both sides. Width changes alone do not move the centreline.

Results use nominal geometry and the stated conventions. They are dimensional answers, not a fitment, safety or legality check.

What does a positive outer-edge change mean?

The outer-edge change is proposed outer position minus current outer position. Positive means farther toward the fender; negative means farther inward. It is a nominal bead-seat comparison, not a measured distance to a body panel or a prediction of visible tire poke.

Inner clearance uses the opposite sign to inner position. If the proposed inner edge moves toward the suspension, relative clearance decreases. A positive clearance result means more relative space; a negative result means less. Your original physical gap is not known to this calculator.

Why width and offset need to be compared together

Half the width difference is added on each side of the wheel centreline. Reducing offset moves that entire centreline outward. Those effects can oppose one another on the inner side while adding together on the outer side, which is why neither width nor offset alone answers the question.

Enter stamped nominal widths in inches and signed offsets in millimetres. Optional spacers are separate for each setup; effective offset equals stamped offset minus spacer thickness. Compare effective offsets, not only the values stamped on the wheels.

What the proportional drawing represents

Both wheels share one scale and one mounting-plane reference. Dashed Current and solid Proposed outlines make the distinction readable without color. The edges describe bead seats; tire bulge, flange shape, camber and suspension travel are absent.

Track width is centreline-to-centreline on an axle. The displayed track change assumes identical changes on both sides and follows effective offset, not extra rim width. A wider wheel at identical offset changes edge position but not centreline track.

Example: wider wheel with lower offset

Inputs: Current wheel width: 7.5 in; Current offset: 45 mm; Proposed wheel width: 8.5 in; Proposed offset: 35 mm; Current spacer: 0 mm; Proposed spacer: 0 mm. Metric results below are computed by the same engine as the live tool.

The proposed outer wheel edge changes by +22.7 mm (toward the fender); relative inner clearance changes by −2.7 mm (less clearance).

Important limitations

Nominal edge movement cannot guarantee vehicle compatibility. Verify actual brake, strut, steering and fender clearances through the vehicle's operating range, including tire shape and load.
